Croatia’s successful entry into the eurozone: A high exchange-rate strategy linked to its specialization in tourism

Having joined the European Union (EU) in 2013 and then the exchange rate mechanism II in July 2022, Croatia became the twentieth member of the eurozone in January 2023. This article uses the country’s current and financial accounts to show how it succeeded in joining the eurozone. First, we present the international financial conditions of Croatia’s entry, analyzing its exchange rate policy and its choices of specialization. We then study the evolution of its standard of living and the sustainability of the strategies adopted. JEL Classification: F14, F21, F32, F36, O11
