A Rallying in Reverse?

Since the display of power of the Manif Pour Tous movement, Catholicism has been returned to the centre of political debates. The political right, “neo-conservative” intellectuals as well as a large part of Catholics are calling to refound the Republic based on “France’s Christian roots.” In their discourse, three types of reverences for Catholicism can be identified. First, the supremacy of Catholicism in State/religion relations should be recognized. Second, the ethical and civil support the Church brings to the French State should be acknowledged. Finally, Catholicism ought to be recognized as France’s majority religion, thus justifying the alien nature of Muslim moors and practices. The beginning of the 21st century is marked by the rise of a new political narrative of French history, combining providence with nationalism.
