In a context of historiographical reassessment in the field of both people’s democracies foreign policy studies and transnational research on the Eastern bloc, this article shows how, during the Cold War, military-economic cooperation proved to be a perfect ground of autonomy for the GDR and Egypt, beginning with the GDR’s establishment of diplomatic relations with Cairo in 1969, and ending with the early signs of its demise in 1989.
