Eighteen “Maréchaux de l’Empire” were appointed on 18 May 1804, and their names are still remembered today. The army and Napoleon’s authority had brought them together. On the other hand, as a result of their diverse origins, their strong characters, their dissimilar skills, their strong personal ambitions they were often at loggerheads and frequently clashed in violent dispute. In this general discussion, Jacques Jourquin describes the specificities of this new military “type”, which became the very symbol of bravery, victory, and “eventfulness”.
