What History Does to Women

1970–2010: Forty years of women’s liberation movement in France, a movement said to be of the “second wave” by women historians. At the initiative of some groups and single persons, 2010 was dedicated to reviving contemporary memory that is quick to forget how far they had to go, together or separately, to have things changed. This “liberation of women” is too often hidden or undermined in French political discourse, even when it comes to celebrating the great boost of May 1968. But women who went through it are not oblivious. In books and magazines there is the gradual development of collective story often conveyed by those who participated in the creation of movement, and/or its maintenance through structures that can barely be identified by the common man. Throughout the year, many interventions have taken place and many more will take place, presenting the work done or raising questions that society as a whole fails to ask about women. This article seeks to retrace the steps that were necessary to help (us) remember our struggles and their echoes.
