Is the forest a common asset, belonging symbolically or materially to all the planet’s inhabitants? Through a comparison of three international regulatory frameworks—the European Union’s Timber Regulation, the “Zero Deforestation” commitment of industrialists and palm oil-producing countries, and the Central African Forest Commission—this article confronts the material difficulties encountered by different groups of actors in protecting forests against the backdrop of their increasing transnational commodification.
