The communalist strategy aims to replace the institutions of the state and capitalism with a confederation of self-governing communities. In order to build these free communities, the aim is to regain control of local municipalities by electing candidates who are committed to carrying out their municipal mandates in accordance with the decisions of extra-institutional popular assemblies. Based on a study of the Gilets jaunes of Commercy’s “Assembly of Assemblies” and the slate of candidates presented in the 2020 municipal elections, this article looks back at the difficulties this movement encountered in trying to undermine political maneuvering from within without being caught up in its clutches.
