The post-socialist transformation in Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s and the 2000s revealed two opposite visions of time that mirror the main theoretical divides in economics. This article presents these conflicting views of time and the system change which have entailed very practical consequences for the populations in these countries through the adopted reform programs. It emphasizes the limits of the mainstream ideology in economics and calls for an analysis that takes explicitly into consideration the institutional dimension of economic phenomena which embodies the memory of past compromises.
