Short food circuits

This article is a practical, roundabout way of illustrating the relationship between town and country. Short food circuits are seen as virtuous (reducing intermediaries and distances, “locavorism”), but what about their sustainability, given their logistical complexity? For the producer, the first link in the chain, marketing and transport represent additional work and costs. Short distribution channels are no less energy-intensive, with flows between farms and points of sale fragmented into a multitude of small volumes. The author proposes a number of organisational solutions to overcome these disadvantages: pooling transport between partner producers and promoting regional logistics cooperation, consolidating the transfer of flows by delegating it to an external service provider. The issue of logistics and the role of non-commercial intermediaries are key.
