The social, environmental, urban, and anti-democratic excesses observed at major sporting events are by no means inevitable. International federations and public authorities still have the opportunity to enter the twenty-first century by changing their software: reducing the scale and specifications, better redistributing commercial profits, genuinely involving the population upstream. . . It’s the governance of events, if not the very definition of sport, that needs to be revisited.
