The dynamics of conflict often involve several third parties. Analyzing the roles that they play, the author shows that they are expanding and diversifying. Consequently, the observers, the mediators, and the experts have become more important. These evolutions lead to objectification and rationalization, but also to a consideration of the emotional aspects and of the suffering caused by conflicts.
