Locating religious feminisms

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2019. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Religious feminisms are often marginalized both within feminist circles and within religious spaces. However, they are best described as mobilizations straddling two organizational fields. This article explores how such doubly located cross-mobilizations emerge, through a historical and comparative survey of Protestant, Catholic, Jewish and Muslim feminisms since the 19th century. Contrary to the notion of a radical separation between religion and feminism, the history of religious feminisms is well entrenched in the history of feminism. But understanding religious feminisms also requires locating them within their religious organizational fields. The article points to several trends that account for the emergence of religious feminisms, such as growing intrareligious pluralization and polarization, or the effects of higher education on religious authority. It also emphasizes the role of academia as an “institutional habitat” (Mary Katzenstein) nested at the intersection of religious and feminist spaces, especially in the U.S.
