Gender norms and bodily experiences: An application of pragmatism to feminist theory

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2021. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article examines the nature of the circle of determination between bodily norms and gender practices, with the aim of developing a method for subverting patriarchal gender norms and promoting feminist and emancipatory practices. It first questions two opposing viewpoints: on the one hand, the idea that the natural body would precede the norms, and, on the other hand, the idea that the body would be integrally constructed by and within gender norms. To do so, the author uses a pragmatist analysis and proposes to understand the relationship between the body and the norms as a transaction, that is, a co-constitution in time of the body and the norms, through the repetition of gender practices. The article supports the following hypothesis: it is possible to perform our gendered behaviors in unusual contexts, thus situating the possibility of a subversion of gender norms not in the modification of their content, but in their context of expression.
