Masculinism, climate change and “man-made” disasters. Toward an environmental profeminist response

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2021. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article explores the gendered nature of the causes of and responses to climatic events around the world, taking human-induced climate change and increasing climate-related natural disasters as a backdrop. It supports long-standing feminist arguments that progressive environmental politics are not free of hegemonic masculinity and masculinism. Far from promoting “ecological masculinities”, it maintains that men must be prepared to relinquish male privilege and discover new ways to relate to each other, to women and to nature. Addressing the social and human causes of climate change will thus require challenging models of hegemonic masculinity that promote technocratic and managerial forms of control over nature and refuse to acknowledge human vulnerability.
