Since the French Revolution, sovereignty has been given to the French people, epitomized by the Nation-state. However, in our post-modern societies, the power is decentralized and politization has mainly become a civil society issue. In presenting both universalistic and protectionist attributes, globalization aggravates this phenomenon. The domain of subjectivity has been reshaped by this whole process and is now in crisis. In this paper, Joël Birman proposes a cartography of the crisis : it mainly manifests itself through the trauma and the dissemination of the humiliation. The author concludes by wondering if the development of these plural sovereignties would allow for both individual and collective affirmation.
