Henri de Lubac, defender of Teilhard: a case of conscience

Le Phénomène Humain and Le Milieu divin were published after the death of Teilhard de Chardin (1955), without the approval of the Society of Jesus. Teilhard’s work was then handed over to the most misleading interpretations, the most dangerous being the communist version of Roger Garaudy. Very soon after Henri de Lubac put forward “A good use of Le Milieu divin” which was blocked by Roman censorship. He warned his superiors with an impressive persistence about the necessity of restoring the truth on Teilhard. Overcoming all obstacles he won his case and in 1962 published The Religious Thought of Fr. Teilhard de Chardin.
