Gender and Diversity in the Training of Educators of Young Children

To grasp the effects of gender and diversity in the training of educators of young children, we have studied the dynamic of a mixed group of students in the context of an analysis of professional situations. The initial focus on gender stereotypes and the difference between the sexes induced some defensive elements, of repression, exclusion, seduction, and transgression. Under the effects of the experience and the professional culture, we can observe a gradual evolution of representations, passing from “sex” as difference to “sex” as diversity. In the course of the work between male and female students, the maturation of the group dynamic drove them bit-by-bit to take on board the professional concerns in creating new solidarities, new links, and new collective and professional resources in favor of actions towards young children and their families.
