The Historic Event: An Unresolved Enigma

What does the spectacular return of the event mean? Behind the apparent return of the traditional so-called eventalist history, that which returns is not the return of the same, but a reflected event, defatalized, and conceived as social construction, as signifying trace still resumed in a retrospective memorial that is both individual and collective. In the words of Michel de Certeau, “the event is what it becomes.” Object of an interrogation always to be adopted by human sciences, the event remains both Sphinx-like, as an unresolved enigma, and Phoenix-like, as it is never foreclosed.
