This article seeks to give an account of the specificity of the current situation of psychoanalysis in Argentina, by way of a historical study of its development from 1910 to the present day. The different stages in the history of psychoanalysis in this South American country are explored with the aim of understanding the process through which Argentina became a sort of international capital, first for Freudianism, then for Kleinianism, and finally for Lacanianism. Apart from shedding light on an internal history, in telling this story we also hope to give a sense of the socio-political and cultural contexts within which it took place. We are also concerned to understand the relationship between psychoanalysis and other ‘psy’ disciplines—especially psychology, whose expansion throughout the Rio de la Plata facilitated the implantation and diffusion of Freudian ideas and practices.
