This article seeks to use pragmatic sociology in combination with the interpretive framework provided by the anthropology of sorcery to describe how processes that bear a formal resemblance to sorcery can exist within the hierarchical relationships of the contemporary workplace. It further seeks to illustrate how employees can extricate themselves from such regimes of violence. Focusing on the case of a female employee working in an administrative setting, the article presents a situation that gives rise to a managerial evil spell, and goes on to describe how the employee is able to extricate herself from this regime of violence by moving the situation toward a regime of justification. The analysis raises questions as to the particularity of this employee’s situation and what this case tells us about the professional workplace of today.
