The issue of science and society relationships is starting to be raised methodically in France as demonstrated by the initiative taken by the French National Research Agency to develop a research programme on the topic. This initiative took the form of a call for proposals for a preparatory workshop. The two selected teams organized seminars which have settled on and dealt with a list of research themes. The results of this reflection have been published in a special double issue of the journal Science & devenir de l’homme. The present text analyzes them and identifies the main lines and what the author considers as the weaknesses in this reflection. In any event, it is a reference publication. This is the first time that such an overview of the relationships between science and society is drawn up in France for the scientific communities concerned and that the attempt to create a unified field of research is overall successful.
