Song as a place of salvation and of covenant. Isaiah 12 and the canticles at the beginning of the book of Isaiah

Analysis based on a speech acts approach helps to highlight how the hymn of Isaiah 12 is introduced by a prophetic announcement, a promise: “You will say on that day: I give thanks to you…” (Is 12:1). Thanksgiving, and the liturgy more generally, is thus presented as a place of fulfilment where the work of God receives its meaning, and is taken up as a work of salvation, the salvation of a people it contributes to gathering and forming. Through the insertion of the hymns into the flow of the pages, the reader is invited to join this people of the saved, brought into the covenant and communion with God.
