Living in this world, not from this world? The community experience of The Farm

The social experiment of The Farm, an intentional community established in Tennessee in 1971, offers interesting lessons on the ability of a social group to do society differently. Thanks to a Weberian analytical grid, testimonies, and participant observations, it is possible to highlight the rules and social practices that have been adopted at two different periods at The Farm. From 1971 to 1983, The Farm was under the charismatic rule of a spiritual leader. Then, in order to move past the material difficulties it was encountering, the community promoted a “Changeover”. This change encouraged residents of The Farm to live according to a model more similar to the outside world. Paradoxically, this eventually allowed The Farm to become an established intentional community in the long term and to continue doing society differently.
