The integration of sustainability-related challenges as a research theme within business and management disciplines has brought about some important ontological and epistemological inconsistencies in this area. Inspired by the author’s experience in a ‘Marie Curie’ research and training programme based on collaboration between academic scholars and business practitioners and a desire for positive social change (‘Innovating for Sustainability’, 2013-2016), this article posits that a ‘supradisciplinary’ effort of knowledge development is a necessary step towards the construction of a management paradigm that is better suited to cope with sustainability issues. Three main forms of supradisciplinarity are identified: multidisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. While all three forms have the potential to foster progress towards sustainability, the process of transdisciplinarity is presented as the most advanced, yet most demanding, form of engagement.
