On the occasion of the Mediterranean Encounters in Marseilles in September 2023, the A., a doctor in Israel, reflects on the daunting issue of welcoming migrants in the light of the experience of the Jewish people, of which she is a member, and of her Christian faith. She recalls the commandment “You shall love the stranger, for in the land of Egypt you were strangers” and examines how the Christian tradition can live out this commandment today, since faith in the fulfilment of the Passover in Jesus Christ implies the acknowledgement of its source in the history of the Jewish people. Welcoming migrants engages the memory of God’s people and their hope.
