Digital links to nature: rethinking relationships

Its purpose was, as mentioned in the workshop title, to ‘Rethinking link(s): crossed views on digital devices for mediating relationships with Nature’. The workshop gathered specialists from different disciplines, i.e. sociology, geography, ecology, engineering or communication studies, and initiated discussions with practitioners on the analysis of what counts as ‘mediation’ in digital relations with nature. The empirical orientation and the original initial intention of the organizers to mix approaches to the building of the digital infrastructures and approaches focussing on the users, enabled vivid debate on various devices using internet such as video games, winery websites or nature observation smartphone applications. There arose out of these debates an agreement on the importance of targeting the user-friendliness of these technologies, what may be termed ‘conviviality’, in order to achieve inclusiveness and efficiency in our relationships with nature.
