Many territories face growing risks that are increasingly multiple and interconnected. Based on the material gathered during a prospective foresight exercise at INRAE and a bibliographic and a bibliometric analysis, this paper proposes a cross-sectional state of fate of environmental risks in 2020 and of the research carried out at INRAE on this topic. The objective includes disaster risks, physical and chemical risks, and risks for ecosystems. The outcomes of this review are put into perspective with regard to the needs of national and international research in this field and the current context of environmental emergency. The analysis highlights the interest of a holistic and integrated approach to environmental risks including the entire domain considered and the need to address environmental risks in a sustainability science perspective to overcome the associated challenges.
