Brazil’s international relations, 2019-2022

Two very different styles in Brazilian diplomacy, first under a truly anti-globalist minister, followed by a professional diplomat guided by the traditional patterns of the Foreign Service. External policy though was commanded by the primitive instincts of the president: a strict submission to Donald Trump, a mistrust concerning China’s “communist” inclinations, conflicts with European partners around environment and Indigenous rights, an ideological divide in South American between Left and Right governments, a strong negationist stance during the Covid pandemics and an objective position favoring Putin’s aggression war. In the end, Brazil found itself in a complete diplomatic isolation.
