The Destinies of Infantile Depressions in Adolescence

For the adolescent who has been weakened by a depressive experience during his childhood, the relation of the subject to himself is marked by his lack of solid moorings, by his narcissistic fragility and the narcissistic flaws whose profiles were constructed during childhood are already organized, but in a different way for each person. I will propose three modalities: a first one which will transform the narcissistic flaws of childhood and the sadness which ensues into an constant necessity to narcissistically cover those same flaws up, including by means of social success... never really satisfactory. A second modality will be marked by the continual quest for the attention of the Other, and beyond that, for his presence and his love in a search for support that is vital so that the subject can feel that he exists. This can take the form of a constant emotional quest, a kind of hysterization of existance. Finally, a third type will take the shape of an existance dominated by anxiety in all its forms, from hypochondria to the contra-phobic search for danger. A depressive threat is always lying latent. When these defensive attitudes fail, the subject is confronted head-on with his depressivity.
