Oedipal Fantasies and Defensive Inhibition in Anorexia in Adolescence

Although they are often associated with borderline functioning, eating disorders are built on a variety of psychic organisations and are far from being as stereotypical as the behavioral manifestations which they exhibit. On the basis of clinical observations and theoretical reflections, the author studies the impact of the sexual in eating disorders in spite of the manifest pregnance of object loss problems, in the light of two case studies whose defensive procedures are quite different, even opposite. Their confrontation makes it possible to better grasp the problem configurations underlying anorexic/bulimic symptoms and particularly, the function which inhibition may take at the center of certain organizations underlying these behaviors. In some cases, it seems to constitute a defensive adjustment destined to fight against the proximity of incestuous and parricidal fantasies whose expression seems transparent in other cases.
