End-of-life decisions in neonatal intensive care units in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation of Belgium – Observations

Little is known about the way end-of-life decisions in cases of extremely preterm births are made in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation of Belgium. In a previous study, neonatologists from the Federation claimed that every end-of-life decision is the result of a consultation involving, on the one hand, the parents, presented as “partners,” and, on the other, various members of the healthcare team. Based on observations made directly within neonatal intensive care units, the current study questions this claim.
