Fetal mortality and SARS-CoV-2 infection: A clinical case report

A patient who was 16 weeks pregnant presented with a fetus that had died in utero. Although asymptomatic, she tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Placental analysis revealed the presence of small scattered foci of villitis and intervillitis with a histiocytic and lymphocytic component. This case highlights the importance of including placental analysis and performing a SARS-CoV-2 screening test in the evaluation of an in utero fetal death.
