Since South Africa destroyed its nuclear arsenal, it has claimed the status of “good international nuclear citizen”, a position confirmed by its engagement in the non-proliferation regime. Pretoria plays a bridge-building role between states with and without nuclear weapons as well as in instances of proliferation. Recent changes have raised doubts around its position, a movement which could threaten South Africa’s nuclear diplomacy.
