23
Elections are held on a regular basis in several African countries, but democracy is far from flourishing. A number of presidents have successfully pushed through measures that permit them to extend their terms of office, and opposition parties lack influence. Meanwhile, China’s drive to increase its presence in Africa will encourage the rise of authoritarianism.
