Through a critical review of Michel Henry’s interpretation of Marx, in opposition to Althusser, this article will try to explain up to which extent Marx can indeed be considered as a philosopher of the individual. This article will highlight the relevance of a reference to the problem of the universals. It will also make Marx’s ontological position clearer. Marx’s philosophical method always presupposes unique individuals and only gives reality to economic, social and political beings from this point of view. If Marx’s from the beginning affirms the individual, the conflict between Michel Henry and Althusser’s school would have to undermined and other differential forms of individuality would have to be considered.
