Historically inseparable from the idea of democracy, French republican secularity was built, in the France of the 19th and 20th centuries, around the idea of public schools and a welfare state, the ferment of national integration. However, republican secularity can also be understood through its philosophical implications: those of moral individualism, a social system based on solidarity, critical rationalism, universalist humanism. Thus, thanks to three competing models— demos, laos, ethnos—it is possible to measure what was politically at stake for republican secularity in fragmented societies undermined by communitarian regression.
