Gabon offers the paradoxical image of a stable country traversed by sociopolitical tensions. This contradiction is exacerbated by a decline in oil production. The question is: can “Bongo-dictatorship,” known locally as “la bongocrature,” survive the end of the oil fields? This article takes up this central problem, underscoring the difficulties the state confronts in redefining its political economy and assuring its survival beyond the rents provided by black gold.
