Between 1945 and 1970, an impressive educational infrastructure was built in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, first in the context of the Ten-Year Plan during colonial times, then through international development aid programs after 1960. Although testifying to a once anticipated progress, this legacy, in its ruined state, today first and foremost serves critiques of the failed state. Discussing a number of specific cases, this contribution seeks, however, to illustrate different positions regarding these “ruins of modernity,” ranging from indifference to fascination, as well as from reappropriations as “lieux de mémoire” to initiatives to safeguard it for the future.
