The ethics of care as a strategy for organizations: The case of atypical working hours in hospitals

This article discusses atypical hours within hospital institutions as a vulnerability factor affecting caregivers in a parenting situation. It tries to identify managerial resources likely to respond to it through the ethics of care. Our argument is supported by a comparative survey carried out among 12 executives and caregivers. The results underline the existing gap between prescribed work and actual work, between rational and emotional approaches, and finally, between the family and professional spheres. We argue that in order to be able to initiate an ethical approach to care in organizations, we must first and foremost be aware of the consequences of the trivialization of real work. This would be favored by exchanges and external views. At the end of this study, we make several proposals stemming in part from the people surveyed and showing the limits encountered, particularly ones of a cultural nature.
