From Antigone to Martin Luther King Jr., the figures of legitimate resistance to oppression are timeless. On the other hand, the doctrines which promote a right of resistance are historically determined. They assume the existence of a particular mental complex articulating a juridical conception of politics and a philosophy of law which permit its consecration. The 17th and 18th centuries were the crucible of this approach.
