Together with an increasing number of scientific works about the “rights of robots”, a persistent question fuelled by recent experiments by roboticists has emerged: could robots become so self-aware that they would impact society negatively and make common law obsolete? To envisage the ethical and legal risks associated with the development of a “consciousness” of robots, it is necessary to determine the ability of their designers to develop artificial intelligence beyond the threshold of “technological singularity”.
