Donald Trump’s colourful personality has led too many observers to focus their attention on him whereas he is only the symptom of a social, economic and political crisis of American society, not unlike the crises that affect most Western democracies. The neoliberal policies implemented for four decades and since the 2008 crisis have destabilised the lower middle-class, increased inequalities and fuelled resentment towards the indifference of the elites. Trump has understood this wrath, and he continues to entertain a highly affective relationship with his electors. To beat him in 2020, the Democrats will have to tackle the causes of this wrath.
