The new French regions in the context of the European Union

This article proposes a definition of “region” in the European Union and draws it on a map. It shows that there is indeed a European regional model but the reality that it covers is diverse. The average EU region is rather small, with a population of slightly above 1.2 million inhabitants. It is rather unbalanced, with a central urban agglomeration by region. There are, however, regions with a very different profile to this standard model. This is particularly the case of the new French regions, the recent reform in France having drifted further away from the established model. The current French regions do not have a size that resembles the European norm. They are among the biggest of the Union, sparsely populated in terms of density, and have a more balanced population spread.
