Semi-presidentialism in post-Soviet regime: Democratic triumph and regression

Despite the quasi-unanimous assessment of a decline of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe, the countries of the region present a highly heterogeneous democratic environment, from electoral authoritarianism to stable democracies, including forms of democratic regression or malaise. A comparative analysis of these countries indicates that, because of its formal rules and their actual implementation, semi-presidentialism increases the process of democratic erosion.
