After a review of earlier research on bilingualism, our object is to present the ELAL Avicenne (Language Evaluation for Allophones and new immigrants), a research tool created by the Language Center of the Child and Adolescent Psychopathology Service of the Avicenne Hospital (Bobigny, Seine-Saint-Denis, France). Over and above the fact that the ELAL Avicenne is a language evaluation tool, its aim is to facilitate the study of bilingualism and the factors which affect the quality of bilingualism in « bilingual » children. At the end of the exploratory period, this article analyses the usefulness and the pertinance of this test for children considered to be bilingual.
