Scarifications in Adolescence: A Suicidal Equivalent?

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2013. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Comparisons between suicide attempts and scarifications are plentiful in the literature, particularly in English language journals, giving birth to new terms like "parasuicide." With such conceptual regroupings, isn’t there a risk of creating confusion and of erasing an essential differentiation, especially where it takes into account the complexity of the human psyche? If the creation of bridges between these two clinical domains is useful, it should not encroach on their specificities in a combination in which every self-aggressive act is equivalent to every other. We should instead try to analyze the common characteristics of suicide attempts and scarifications in adolescence, but also their differences, hinging on the central axis of the adolescent process. The risk factors tend to be common to both behaviors, whereas their place in psychosexual development reveals their uniqueness.
