The objective of this study was to explore the role of food in the family relations of adolescents presenting an anorexia nervosa. Eleven interviews were carried out with the anorexic adolescents aged from thirteen to eighteen, and with their parents. We chose a qualitative methodology using an original tool: photo-elicitation. The verbal material was analyzed with the help of IPA: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The results were organized along two axes: the first explored the place of food in parent-child interactions (relational control, resemblances and differences, as well as the parental function), the second axis explored group and family dynamics (cohesion, the screen conflict, and family functioning). Our study made it possible to show the pertinence of photo-elicitation and its contribution to research in adolescent psychiatry. On the therapeutic level, it confirmed the necessity of a family approach in treatment programs and suggested the interest of individual sessions with anorexic adolescents, particularly concerning the construction of their self.
