Autism: An evaluation of the diagnoses and treatments in intersectoral child psychiatry

In the framework of research on intersectoral child psychiatry, it seems important to differentiate, on the clinical and psychopathological levels, pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) that are mechanisms of autistic functioning from those that are considered psychotic. In our opinion, this difference has important effects that we will expand upon here, relating to the understanding of each subject and to the therapeutic, socializing and pedagogical measures established. Out of 138 patients included in the study for an active file of approximately 1800 patients, fifty-three corresponded to criteria of autism and eighty-five to that of psychosis (or non-autistic PDD). The interventions aim at multidimensional actions and developments that are intensive, implemented early, and which should be maintained over time and coordinated by psychoanalytical psychiatrists. For each group, evolving evaluation grids were presented at two precise moments: initial state and current state. The results showed a positive development or very positive development in more than half the cases, an average or weak development for one third of the children and stagnation or a worsening development for one child in ten.
