Mockery of children born with a facial malformation: Analysis and prevention

In clinical practice with children born with facial malformations, mockery is often mentioned, but some children are not victims of such abuse. A theoretical and clinical reflection has been carried out with the aim of prevention, on the basis of clinical interviews on this subject. The children who are mocked are unable to talk about themselves, and their parents always recall a traumatic experience at the moment of the discovery of the malformation and the diagnosis, a narcissistic vulnerability, with this having remained active in the parental psyche. Shame and guilt are felt. The child has inherited these feelings, something that is expressed in the avoidance of this part of his/her life story and the denial of his/her malformation. Thus, when confronted with remarks made by the Other, (s)he is stymied. In our hypothesis, this first mockery will wound the child, all the more because it touches his/her narcissism, this shame that has been passed down to him/her and which (s)he experiences. All necessary conditions are present for the mockery to establish itself in the child’s life.
