The psychological stakes of parenting and the therapeutic potential of the free genogram: A pilot study with high-risk young mothers

Clinicians dealing with parents struggling with psychosocial difficulties often mention a powerless feeling to modify the cycles (often generational) of child maltreatment, thus raising awareness for their need to be better equipped in such cases. More specifically, some characteristics of the parents pose singular barriers to therapeutic outcomes such as limited access to their intrapsychic world (with a frequent tendency of acting-out or denial) or the rigid aspect of their discourse regarding personal and family difficulties. An action-research implemented an innovative clinical tool—the “free genogram”—in the psychosocial follow-up of eight young struggling mothers who reported a history of child abuse. Data (verbatim and drawings of the genograms) were analyzed at a conceptual level. Results illustrate the projective and therapeutic potential of this tool, revealing the parent’s affective expectations and unresolved conflicts, all the while re-questioning the previous and fatalistic story of their filiation.
